For the past decade, Matthews has wandered and mapped her personal, metaphorical Underworld in an Orphic descent, transforming the grief of losing both her parents into poetry, reflection, and art. Exploring mythologies, multi-lingual literature, myriad relationships, and mixed media arts, Matthews' poetry moves beyond the unavoidable path of despair through lust and love onto the trials of treachery. The only path is through, as they say, as her poems find their way through the Shadow World to finally return to find her steadfast partner of nearly 25 years by her side and the eager hand of a fiercely loyal, single-dimpled, redheaded child whose gaze could rival Medusa's own.
